Is it safe to open an CD account through on-line?

I am going to open CD with a high amount of money.
On-line offeres a higher interest rate than opening in branch.
They say I also have to transfer the money through on-line too.
Is on-line openning safe to do?

When I opened one, I set up a minimum deposit of $100. Once it cleared, and I was able to access the bank online (FDIC Insured bank even if not FDIC CD account), I called someone as well to make sure all was as I expected. The following week I then transferred the money in. I did this twice. Both turned out to be legit accounts, but one was so incredibly slow, I was glad to have only put in the $100 and moved it out/closed the account. I researched the accounts via bankrate.com.
